Global Sustainability Initiative (GSI) began in the summer of 2017, out of a startup company called SafeFlame. The founders of GSI were working at SafeFlame to implement anaerobic digestion as a means of creating sustainable and clean-burning fuel for developing countries. After SafeFlame took a new direction, GSI was created as a University of Washington RSO with a goal to work with companies like SafeFlame to make their visions of the future a reality.

Our Story

GSI is currently a student club at the University of Washington. Members of the club come from different fields of study that hope to contribute their knowledge of learning in class to solve real-world problems to support sustainability.

Since summer 2017...

GSI continued the work of SafeFlame by pursuing a project to build a food truck that uses anaerobic digestion to cook food. GSI hopes that this project will promote the use of anaerobic digestion on campus and bring attention to this technology as a solution to hazardous fumes from cooking situations in developing countries.
